Hervé Di Rosa: Mucem, Collectoys & More…

Expo Di Rosa, Mucem Marseille, 2025

The colour, humour and unbridled imagination of the artist make the visit a pleasure for young and old alike.

Hervé Di Rosa is an artist from Sète, known as one of the founders of Figuration Libre, an artistic movement that blends popular culture, comic strips and contemporary art. Passionate about the modest arts, in 2000 he created the MIAM (Musée International des Arts Modestes), a space dedicated to art forms that are often marginalised, ranging from toys and posters to art brut and everyday objects. His colourful, narrative work draws on a wide range of influences, from graffiti to craft traditions from around the world. ‘MIAM is like the Mucem’s little brother,’ says Di Rosa.

Right from the entrance door, topped by a huge fresco created especially for the occasion, it is clear that the artist was heavily involved in the preparation and staging of this exhibition, as part of a trio formed by art critic Jean Seisser as artistic director and Vincent Giovanni, head curator of the Mucem’s performing arts department. Like Macha Makeieff, he has lent a large number of objects from his personal collections, which have naturally been incorporated into the Mucem collection.

“When I was a child, I was a keen reader of Pilote magazine, whose slogan was: ‘The newspaper that thinks while you have fun’. My art is not aimed at specialists or doctoral students, but at everyone, connoisseurs and novices alike.”
